Today, we are crossing the Drake Passage. The captain keeps saying that we are so lucky
because the ocean is calm….
Which is
good, because in spite of my scopolamine patch and pressure bracelets, I am sea sick…… It’s not too bad if I don’t do anything, but if I try to move
fast….. Well, I’ll spare you the gory details, for they are not pretty. I think this is going to be a good way to get
rid of all the extra calories I’ve packed on over the last few days……….
The plan for today was all about crossing the Drake passage as fast as
possible, so that we can make it to Antarctica, and terra ferma as fast as
possible. (YIPPEE!).
That was Captain Le Kouzic’s job. The fact that the sea is so calm makes this
easier, and we will be a bit ahead of schedule – which is great, because it
means we get to go onshore right away.
However, if our captain says one more time how flat it is out there, I may have to slap
him! It does not feel flat to my
stomach!
Our job was to explore the boat, look for sea birds and try on
our expedition gear: By tomorrow, where
we layer up to go out, we will all be looking like red Michelin men!
(that's Susan and me, but could be anyone.....)
There was a big gala dinner this evening –Joe, Jim and Susan
seemed to enjoy it…. For myself, although
I am feeling a bit better, I still can’t eat much, and certainly not rich
food that was served at dinner (you know I’m not well when I turn down foie
gras and lobster….)
Hoping for a longer blog, full of pictures of Shelter Islands tomorro.

Safe sailing and here's to the calm seas :-)
Hope you arrive at your destination quickily. Feeling sea sick is awful and there is no getting away from it. Wishing you calm seas!
PS It will be brutally cold here
again tonight.
