from Digby, Nova Scotia to SaintJohn, the capital of New Brunswick. The ferry ride takes about 2 1// hours but is quite pleasant, with a nice lounge inside and even some live music.
It was another calm and sunny day, so we could watch Nova Scotia receede and the sea birds fly by from the outside deck.
Our first look of Saint John was its industrial suburbs, and not vey pretty.
The town itself, which is very small, was dwarfed by the huge cruise ships docking there. Of couse, a light house welcomed us to port.
Only about 5 minutes away from the ferry terminal are the “reversing falls”, where the Saint John’s river meets the bay of Fundy in turbulent swirls (pictured on top of blog) and, at high tides, run backward. It was just past low tide, so we could see the water starting to fight its way up. It was quite mesmerizing.
It can be viewed both from the nice observation deck built on top, or from closer up by going down a stair pathway. It’s cool either way. We are planning on going back tomorrow on our way out, which should be high tide.
I then took a walk through downtown - don’t blink or you’ll miss it…. Including its famous indoor market. It obviously used to be the primary food market, but now only a few grocers and butchers remain, and the rest is mostly arts and craft. Still very cool.
The town itself is objectively not that pretty. Its harbor is very industrial ,and dominated by cruise ships.
It has about 4 blocks of older buildings from the 1800’s which are pretty nice, and a lot of pretty flower beds, but that’s about it.
In it’s defense, it was destroyed by a fire in the mid 1800, so very little original remains.
And - we had a very nice dinner by the harbor, outside again, since the weather keeps being amazing! Since we changed province, we changed our main source of protein from scallops to lobster.
I took a walk on the boardwalk around the harbor after dinner. Again, not particularly pretty, but very pleasant, plus, this guy was making giant bubbles for no reason at all. It made me happy, and it made him happy that I was happy It was nice!
