ROAD TRIP! From Albuquerque to Santa Fe

After a completely uneventful trip (my favorite kind of trip) from New York to Albuquerque, via Dallas - with every plane on time, easy connection and all of our luggage making it out of the plane quickly, we rented a car and headed to Santa Fe.  Albuquerque itself is not that interesting (we had taken the gondola to the top of the mountain a long time ago when we came through here with Claire and Emily, and other than that, there is not that much to do -although I admit that I was truly tempted by the Atomic Bomb Museum).

So instead of lingering on, we took the scenic route to Santa Fe:  the highway is shorter, but boring, and even with the detour, it's only about an hour and a half drive.  The scenic route was indeed beautiful, offering grand views of the Sandia Mountains, of the parched land, and of the dry brush that covers it.  It is so different from where we live.  And it is so dry!

We stopped in the old coal mining town of Madrid.  It is now a funky, one street, artsy, dusty little town, where we had quesadillas and fried roasted green chile peppers- because....  when in Rome (or in this case in Madrid......).

Our (very nice!) hotel is near Santa Fe's famous plaza, so after meeting with some of the Dartmouth Alumni, I took a stroll there.

A fiesta was going on: dancing, lot's of local food, music.  It was very pleasant. But I think the early rise, combined with the altitude and the dry air are getting to me, and I'm very tired.

So we just had a drink on our lovely veranda,
strolled back out to the plaza for some Navajo Tacos and pork chops (and lemonade) and are going to bed early......
We'll see much more of Santa Fe tomorrow.
