Even from St John's, it takes almost 4 hours to drive to the very south of Newfoundland, and then take a ferry to France!
Today, the drive was lovely because of the sunshine. Newfoundland is completely covered with little ponds, a lot of which have little cottages around them.
We will try to stop at several of the sites on the way back, but today was all about making it to St Pierre.
But first, we had to cross the border, and get onto a 1 1/2 hour ferry.
Along the way, puffins flew along the boat. I was so happy about it. They were going too fast to take pictures, but who cares, they were there!
If anything, the remoteness makes it more exciting. Once you get here - it is France! I am watching TV2 (a great program about music of the 60's and 70's - when I still lived there, so I know all of it - I LOVE IT!!!!).
Of course, people speak French - but not just French - French like back home - not even a trace of a Quebecois accent! And it's tiny! I'll have more about history tomorrow, but today, I took a walk to the end of the island, and it's both very beautiful and very barren - and very empty - it's hard to understand how this even came to be.
But here is a few pictures that may explain why people stay....
